Grab some Software
First of all you will need some good software that really makes working pixels a breeze. For that you have Pixen. This is a piece of software that is exclusive to OS X that has nothing pixel art in mind. It is really a fun tool to have around. You never know when you might want to dabble in the world of pixel creativity.
Note: You can certainly use photoshop or any image editing software of your choice to create pixel art, if for some strange reason you run a windows operating system. But seriously, get Pixen. It is great.
